In addition to Vesak, during enlightenment month, Geshe Jamyang holds a "virtual meditation group" every night of this holy month. At 8:00 PM Geshe rings a bell that hangs on the porch of his house and then does a short meditation to honor Buddha Shakyamuni. All Nalanda members are strongly encouraged to also do a short meditation at 8:00 PM along with Geshe and other members. If you don't have a daily meditation practice this is a great way put your toe in and commit to one for a month. If you do practice daily, if it is possible to shift your time to 8:00 PM that would be great and will add much power to the observance. In any case, it is surprisingly rewarding to align yourself in this way with Geshe and other TNI members and the Buddha by doing a short practice. It does not have to be long and the form of meditation can be whatever you prefer. One recommended way is to do the practice associated with your book group. For level 1 that would be Mindfulness, for level 2 that would be a Mahayana practice like equanimity or loving-kindness, for level 3 that could be a bodhicitta or other vajrayana practice. Whatever meditation you choose, definitely give this a try, this is the high holidays of Buddhism, and I guarantee it will feel good at the next live group meditation on Thursdays.
May 31th, Thursday 6:15 pm.
The three major events of Buddha Shakyamuni's life, his birth, enlightenment, and death, all occurred during the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar. Tibetans and many other Buddhist traditions celebrate all three of these events on the full moon day of this month. This year that falls on Thursday, May 31. Consequently, before our regular Thursday meditation we are going to have a vegetarian potluck at the Temple. Please bring a vegetarian dish to share with others. It needs to be something ready to eat because we don't have time or facilities to do any extended preparation. Simple will be best. Nalanda will provide drinks and utensils for the meal. We will have meditation after the potluck, more or beginning more or less around 7 PM as usual May 11th, 12th & 13th Friday, Sat. & Sun.
