Wheel of Dharma

First Thursday Public Talks with Geshe Jamyang Tsultrim

On the first Thursday of each month--exceptions will be noticed here--Geshe Jamyang Tsultrim gives a dharma talk that is open to the public on a variety of buddhist topics. The talks begin at 7:00 PM and are held at the Chua Lien Hoa Temple on 1211 Wilson Street NE, Olympia, Wa.

Autumn Talk Series

Over the autumn Thursdays, Geshe Tsultrim presents a complete series of Buddhist teachings and practices as well as their application in our daily life experiences. He summarizes the content into three major stages each month:

  • September 2, 2010:
Two Truths as the Basis of the Nature of Phenomena
Knowing and applying the distinctions of two truths or realities and validities of our subjectivities and objectivities will determine the genuine peace or the habitual pattern of destructiveness within oneself, others and the world. Participants will learn the comprehensive insights of the topic from various philosophical perspectives. Is truth simply subjective or objective, and combined or neither? What are the methodologies to actualize it through direct perception or experience?
  • October 7, 2010:
The Union of the Two Paths: Wisdom and Its Methods
Engaging with two integrated paths of wisdom and its methods determine the effectiveness and achievements of one’s practice on these paths in the journey of personal and social transformation. Participants will learn about various methods and their suitability to one’s aptitude and abilities.
  • November 4, 2010:
Two Results: The Measurements and Characteristics of Enlightenment
Identifying the various signs and characteristics of the actual state of enlightenments within oneself will bring a sense of conviction and encourage to pursue one’s personal transformation. And to develope altruism benefiting all beings. What is enlightenment? Is it achievable? If not, why bother?
These classical topics will be presented in the context of contemporary Western life events and experiences without losing their original Tibetan buddhist essence.

As we approach the traditional Western holidays, Geshe Tsultrim will make a special presentation:

  • December 2, 2010:
Effictive Methods of Making New Year's Resolutions from Eastern Wisdom and Western Values
Recognizing specific new resolutions and developing effective methods will not only initiate but also maintain them in one’s daily life. Participants explore one’s genuine value and develop realistic action plans to achieve that designated value in life. What are the possible obstacles and methods of achieving new resolutions?

Practice Programs

The Nalanda Institute offers two practice programs for members in 2010. These two groups study and meditate on specific texts and study deeply the following two important subject areas:

Foundation Practice Program:

  • Foundation Practice Program: Cultivation of Inner Peace & Altruism begins February 20 - 1:00pm and meets the 3rd Saturday of each month. Anyone may join at any time.

Awakening Experience Through Mind Training

Directed by Geshe Jamyang Tsultrim, these programs focus on meditation practice, the study of traditional Tibetan buddhist texts, and group discussion. Both programs meet monthly as well as help both new and experienced students implement a daily meditation practice. For details about the programs and registration, please see the attached program posters.
